Alternatively, we can set up your site using a prefix address which will allow anyone to see your site, but has two drawbacks: it requires you to give out a longer, more complex address (of the form http://www.yoursite.com/prefix/) and to design your site so that every link includes the prefix. There is no additional charge for this configuration. Basic web hosting costs $15 USD a month, not including domain registration (see below). Sign up Extra Disk Space and/or Transfers Additional disk space costs $0.25 USD per MB, per month, or $10 USD per 50 MB, per month. It must be purchased in advance. Note that there is also a limit on the number of files you may have in your home and/or web directories; it is 200 per MB of space you are allotted. For example, a shell account, which is allotted 25 MB of space, has a limit of 5000 files. See the Frequently Asked Technical Questions page for more details on both disk space and file limits. Additional transfers cost $0.03 USD per MB, per month. These charges will be listed on the following month's bill. Domain Registration Before you can set up a hosting account for a domain name, you must register it via one of the many accredited registrars, such as Network Solutions and OpenSRS. Unfortunately for those who wish to be anonymous, ICANN rules require applicants for domain names to provide their correct names, addresses, and phone numbers. (ICANN is a coordinating body for certain Internet resources, such as domain names. See www.icann.org for more information.) The only way around this rule that does not risk losing your domain name is to have a third party register your name and hold it for you. Accordingly, for a fee of $20 USD per year, we will register your .com, .net, or .org domain name, using our contact information and nameservers (which we will set up for free). (For prices on other registrations, email us.) We will also give you easy directions on how to modify your contact information and/or nameservers, should you desire to do so. There is one drawback, however. Because of the way the rules work, we MUST have at least one valid way to contact you. This can be a phone number, address, email address, etc. In case of a trademark or other lawsuit, we will contact you with the relevant information, but we will NOT act as a go-between or arbitrator, nor will we accept any legal responsibility. Also, should it become necessary as a last resort, we will revoke your domain name and refund a prorated portion of your registration fee. We expect such circumstances to be exceedingly rare, but we cannot afford to become embroiled in the often-messy legalities surrounding domain name lawsuits. Sign up |
